Film Opening Research #1 - In the Tall Grass(2019)
How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film?
Not including the zooming in aerial shot of the grass, just the title of the movie is displayed.
What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?
The movie opens with an aerial shot of a field of grass that slowly gets closer and closer. As we get nearly to the grass, the middle patch begins to move. The film then suddenly cuts to a black screen with the movie title in large red uppercase letters. In contrast to this, the next opening scene is of an almost illuminated bright blue sky and a long road surrounded by short, perfect green grass. A head-on shot shows a car moving down the street. It the cuts to an extreme close up of a lady's eyes, then an establishing shot of the long stretch of road still in front of them.
What connotations do the images carry?
What connotations do the images carry?
The slow zooming in of the grass is eerie and feels unsettling, especially with the haunted voices in the background. Then the grass suddenly moving in the center is startling and creates a greater feeling of discomfort. The sudden cut to the dark black and red title slide and the eerie cut in the music is very in-you-face. The contrast between this eerie opening and the bright blue and green, almost perfect road trip setting with slow 70s music playing in the background makes the viewer feel bad for the unsuspecting character in the car, who are unaware they will be the center of a horrific event. The close up of the lady's eyes is very sudden and leave the viewer questioning who she is. Then seeing the long strength of road in front of them furthers the idea that they are very isolated on this road.
How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset?
How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset?
The setting plays an absolute major part in the movie. The entire plot happens in an isolated field of tall grass, taller than all the characters, and as it gets darker out, it gets harder to navigate the seemingly impossible labyrinth of grass. As the antagonist is revealed, the music intensifies whenever he closes in on the other characters (mis-en-scene). The bright color is a stark contrast from the obvious ominousness of the movie, which will soon fall into darkness as chaos breaks loose. The audio fits perfectly with the feeling of the movie and helps reinforce some of the portrayals the director is trying to capture.

What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

How has technology been used effectively? You might want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques.
How has technology been used effectively? You might want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques.
The use of the aerial shot slowly zooming in on the grass effectively begins the movie with the anxious feeling horror fans love. All the transitions were cuts, but the lighting dims as the movie gets more and more intense and the sun goes away. The lighting turns darker, yet not noir, and this adds to the eeriness of the film. The non-diegetic post-synchronized dubbing of the intense and eerie background music also adds to the suspense and climax of the movie.
