5 Master Shots w Sound Effects
Contrast: I kept the original digenic sound for this edit because I felt the background noises and dialogue was important to maintaining the emotion and context of the scene I wanted to establish. In the first clip, I am sitting outside in my free period working on my assignments, and the original audio shows that I am working quietly and the only noises are the peaceful noises of the birds and wind outside while I study. This creates a relaxing emotion and shows that I am focused on my work. The second clip cuts to the noisy background noise of the vending machines and dialogue between me and another troublesome student planning to skip class together. This dialogue was important to establish context, so I left it as is.
Parallelism: I used off-screen sound in the first clip of this edit. Both clips were filmed in my room, but to make it seem more like the first clips was taken in a classroom as test grades were handed back to the students, I did a voice-over of the clip to make it sound like two other students were having an off-screen conversation nearby about how they feel they did on the quiz. This creates a more classroom like environment (since it sounds like other students are in the room waiting to receive their scores).
Symbolism: I used postsynchronization dubbing in both clips to better show the intensity of the scenes. The original clips had no audio and were quiet, but adding the sound of reckless speeding cars and a car crash to the scene helps portray the emotion of recklessness and the intensity of the consequences of the driver's actions. The sounds were added after the clips were finished to sound like they were happening while the clips were shot.
Simultaneity: I used voice over for this edit to narrate the scenes and help the viewer get a better understanding of what was happening. I described what Sasha was doing on her phone as we see her walking, then in the next clip, I give background information as to where I was walking down from in the second clip. I the last clip, the narrator reveals that these two events are linked, because the clip of Sasha walking into school on her phone was meant to show that she sent me a text to let me know that she was here and I could come down from the library to meet up with her. The voice over was used to clear up any confusion for the viewer and help them imagine the scene more clearly.
Leitmotif: Because this is a leitmotif edit, non-diegetic sound was used to portray the importance of a certain scene by having background music play in that scene that only the audience can hear. The teacher nor the student can hear the suspenseful music playing as the teacher approaches the student skipping class, but the audience can, and this creates a feeling of anticipation since we know something is about to happen (the student getting in trouble).
